Hi! And welcome to the last, but certainly not least week twelve of my blog post. As I was saying in my last blog post I have been working hard to finish up my last chunky knit blanket. This is a pale pink, medium, tight knitted blanket that has been very time consuming but I have finished it. I plan to use this blanket as a gift some time down the road. I want to keep many blankets already made to show people that are curious to how they might look. I will use these already made blankets as "show blankets". The pink along with the grey chunky knit blanket that I have recently finished up will be used as "show blankets". I will be using both of these blankets during my presentation to show examples of what I have been working on for the past twelve weeks. My goal for the next week is to begin putting my presentation together and find ways to make my presentation more interesting. Not only do I want an interesting presentation but I also want it to be interactive. I want to find a way to interact with the audience and keep them involved. As I was saying in last weeks blog post, I thought about having a short interactive activity with the class having a small piece of wool and me walking through a short demo with them and showing my passion for knitting. With me doing this demo I hope that the audience will better grasp what I mean when I discuss the way I feel about knitting. Since I do plan on doing this short demo, this weekend I am going to have to go out and find a roll of wool at Hobby Lobby or other craft stores that will hopefully be on sale or I have a coupon for. This week I will also be preparing my prezi for my presentation next week. This next week I will be rapping this project up but that doesn't mean that I am going to stop knitting. The past twelve weeks has introduced me to one thing that I am very passionate for, knitting.

Hi! Welcome to week eleven of my blog post! I am now getting close to the end of the twelve weeks and I have been working hard to finish strong. This past week I have finished up another chunky knit blanket! As I was saying in last weeks blog post I had two chunky knit blankets going all at once which was very stressful. Over the weekend I stayed up all night Saturday night finishing a grey, chunky knit, large blanket. This one is just like the custom order that I did a few weeks back. This blanket has taken lots of time and effort to finish, but it is my favorite blanket that I have made so far. I have noticed that over the past few weeks I have gotten faster at knitting the chunky knit blankets. I have not only became more efficient in my work but I am also more passionate about knitting. It has turned into a hobby of mine. I especially find my self wanting to knit more when I am stressed because it is a nice stress reliever. My goal for the next week is to finish my pale pink, small, chunky knitted blanket. I have gotten a good start to this blanket but I got so caught up in the other one that I have not made and progress with the pink one. I am wanting to finish the pink blanket this week so I can focus on my final product for genius hour. This week I also want to research ideas to make my presentation interesting and entertaining to the audience. I thought about having a short hands on interaction during the presentation by providing everyone with a short piece of wool and showing them step by step how I knit these blankets. They will only receive a sample of wool, not a whole blanket or anything major. I need to check with my mentor and Mr. Barker to get their input about my ideas. Over this next week, I will be working hard to finish the pale pink blanket and come up with good ideas for my final project. See you next week!
Hi! And welcome to week ten of my blog post! As I was saying last week, I have started on a new chunky knit blanket. I have fallen behind because I did not have much time to work on it over the weekend. My goal for this week is to spend more time working on it in order to get it done before the end of the twelve week period.
Although I did not get very far into this blanket, I did go to hobby lobby Saturday and found the wool that I have been looking for. I have been looking for the wool that I knitted the large, grey, chunky, loose knitted blanket a couple weeks ago. I ended up getting four rolls of this wool and they were all 40% off so I got them very cheap. My goal for the next two weeks is to finish both of these chunky knit blankets before the end of the twelve weeks. This will be a challenge for me but I want to finish strong for the end of the twelve weeks. In order to finish both of these blankets in two weeks, I will need to start on the grey blanket tonight and switch off between the two each day. As I was saying in last weeks blog post I had a new idea of a Mother's Day discount. I discussed this idea with my mentor and they agreed that I have waited too long and it is too close to Mother's Day to take orders. One other valid point she had was that I am only a beginning business and I am not at a good, steady point yet to have discounts. I do plan to do discounts in the future when I begin to make profit from LA Knits. To wrap up this weeks blog post, my goals are to finish the two blankets that I am working on and keep looking for more wool to keep knitting even after these twelve weeks . Hi! Welcome to week nine of my blog post! As I was saying in last weeks post, I am starting on a new blanket! I am very excited about this one because it is not an order, it is just for whatever I want it to be for. This blanket is a medium sized, pale pink wool, that will be tight knitted so it will be time consuming. With this blanket I want to either use it as a show blanket for the LA Knit party or as a Mother's Day gift for my mother.
After knitting this blanket, that will be last bit of wool that I have so my goal for this next week is to first go to hobby lobby and other craft stores to look for wool because they are usually on sale and much cheaper than for what I can get the wool online for. If I do not find any of the wool that I am wanting or needing then I will start looking online and order some in bulk for the LA Knit party. One idea that I had to get LA Knits out there and get people interested in the chunky knit blankets is having a Mother's Day sale on certain styles and colors of blankets. If I do end up wanting to do this I will need to make more flyers and hang them up in the local business's to get the word out there before it is too late. With LA Knits being a slow, just getting started business I will not be able to give a huge discount. If I did do the Mother's Day discount it would be something like $10.00 off $50.00. So people would have to spend a certain amount to get the discount. I will be discussing this idea with my mentor and posting flyers soon if I do decide to do it. Hi! Welcome to week eight of my blog post. As you saw in my last post I finished up my second order and since the customer was a family friend she stopped by my house and picked it up. She fell in love with her custom order blanket! She was very excited to get it home and use it as a couch throw in her living room. When she came over to pick up her order she was very interested in learning how to knit these chunky knit blankets so I told her my idea about having an LA Knit party. She thought it was a great idea and she said she would also invite her friends and family. One change that I may make to this LA Knit party is I do not want to teach them because I want to be able to sell these blankets and make a profit from it but if I teach them how to do it than that could ruin LA Knits.
My goal this week is to start knitting a blanket with the wool that I have recently purchased from hobby lobby. This blanket will be time consuming because it is a large tight knitted blanket and they do tend to take more time. I want to have this blanket done and a few others knitted before the end of the twelve weeks to show when I present my genius hour project. The order that I recently finished up was the best blanket that I have ever knitted. My goal is to order that exact same wool and knit another one just like it to show while presenting my project. One other thing that I have completed this week was flyers to hang in the local businesses. My plan is to deliver them to the stores on Thursday afternoon. The next thing I want to design is the LA Knit party invitations if I do end up having this party like I am wanting to. Hello! And welcome to week seven of my blog post! As I was saying in my last blog post I have started on my second order. With this order being a huge chunky knit, thick, tight knitted blanket it has been a lot more difficult than the regular wool that I have been knitting with. This order is been very expensive, taken a lot of time to do, and also very frustrating. I am finishing up this order tonight, as much of a hassle it has been, it has turned out to be a very nice blanket. I love the tight knit even if it did take more wool and was more expensive the thicker wool looks fantastic and very cozy! My initial thought was to charge my customer a higher price because I did have to custom order the wool she wanted which was more expensive and very time consuming but I believe that I will charge enough to cover the price of the wool and just a little for labor because she is a family friend. Over spring break I went wool shopping and went to many craft stores looking for wool to buy so I do not have to order it. I went to hobby lobby and found a "bubble gum pink" wool. It is about a medium size and I bought what they had left of it. I plan on start knitting this blanket soon. I want to knit this one as a mothers day gift for my mom sense it is coming up and she has been talking about wanting me to make her one. By saying that I also had the idea to advertise for mothers day gifts. I am wanting to make flyers that explain the prices, sizes, and colors of the blankets and give a contact number and email for anyone that is wanting to place an order. Here is the final product of my second order being used as a bed throw!
Hi! Welcome to week six of my blog post! In my last post I was saying that I have recently finished up my first order! I am very excited to say that my customer received her chunky knit blanket and absolutely loved it! She described it as "warm, comfy, and a great sofa throw." I have recently started on my second order and have had trouble getting started on this one because the wool that my customer wanted is very thick and hard to work with especially with this blanket being a tight knitted blanket instead of a loose knit like my first order. My plan for the next week is to advertise. I am wanting to get the word out about LA Knits. I am beginning to design mini posters that advertise LA Knits and they will be hung up in local businesses that I have already received permission to hang the flyers. One idea that I have thought of doing is an online eBay store. The only problem with an online store is that you have to consider shipping prices rather than just for the knitting materials and labor. Another great online way of advertising that I thought of is posting LA Knits on Davie County Online Yard Sale. This page is found on Facebook and is local so shipping will not be an issue. As I was saying in my last blog post, I am wanting to have an LA Knits show party. I have been discussing this idea will my mentor and the plan is to first, place a large order of wool and have some blankets already knitted to sell at the party and to also have enough unknitted wool to teach the party members how to make these chunky knitted blankets. I am planning to have this LA Knit show party towards the end of the twelve weeks of genius hour after I have made some profit to help cover the cost of the LA Knit show party.
Welcome back to my blog post! As I was saying in last weeks post I did get started on my first order. I have recently finished knitting it and my customer is planning to come pick it up tomorrow evening. This blanket that I recently finished was a grey, soft, loose chunky knitted blanket it was regular sized but took less wool to knit because of the loose knit. After finally finishing my first order I have not only improved my knitting skills but I have also learned a lot from doing just one blanket. I have learned more about time management. I have realized that in order to keep my customers happy and avoid conflict, I need to be more efficient while knitting. One thing that I am afraid of it is that I may be putting more time and effort into knitting these blankets than I am actually getting out of it. Knitting has became a passion to me but I have realized that it is very time consuming and me being a busy high school student it is hard to manage my time in order to have enough time to finish knitting my orders and keep my customers satisfied. I am now beginning to start on my second order which is a grey huge chunky knit blanket. I had to special order the wool for this blanket because my customer is wanting a huge wool which also costs extra. I notified my customer to make sure that was okay before ordering and that was fine with her. With this blanket being a tight knitted, huge chunky wool I do believe that this order will take longer than the typical orders and will also cost more. My plan this week is to get a good start on the second order and try to knit this blanket faster than the first order. Over the next couple of weeks I am wanting to improve the speed of my knitting and speed up the process of taking orders, knitting, and delivering. Here is the final product of my first order. In this picture it is used just as a couch throw for decoration but it can also be used to snuggle up in.
Hi, Welcome to week five of my blog post! As I was saying in last weeks blog post I have started to knit my first chunky knit order. This order is a grey, soft wool, loose knitted medium sized blanket. I have gotten a great start to my first order but I have ran into some struggles. Some things that I did not consider before starting LA Knits was the ordering process of the wool. The wool that is the price, size, and color that I need comes all the way from China and takes over two weeks to get here. My plan to avoid this problem of it taking almost a whole month to finish a chunky knit blanket is to start ordering the wool in bulk. I want to begin ordering a variety of sizes and colors to order in advance. The only down side to this is that it limits the variety that customers get to choose from. I am wanting to order bulks of popular basic colors such as cream(off white), grey, pale pink, black, and maybe a certain shade of blue. I will be willing to take special orders but I will need to notify the customer that it will take longer and there will be a small up charge of $10.00. By doing this it will make LA Knits more efficient and I will be able to take more orders. By ordering the wool in bulk and preparing for orders it will also speed up the cycle of taking orders, knitting the blankets, and making profit from the blankets that are sold. To ensure that I have chosen the correct popular colors, I have done research to show the most popular decorative colors that people use. As shown above are some of the basic colors that I have listed. These colors are the popular colors that people usually order. This is a much more wider variety than I am wanting to have but I will corporate some of these colors with the ones that I have already listed.
Welcome to week three of my blog post! As I was saying in my last blog post I am getting started on knitting my first order! The wool came in last week and I have began to start knitting it. It is a soft knitted, loose, grey chunky blanket. A problem that I have ran into is that it is taking a lot longer to finish knitting one blanket than expected. Also with the loose chunky knitted blankets it does not take as much wool than a regular tight chunky knit blanket. After starting on this blanket I had began to realize that the regular tight knit blankets will require more wool and also more time to knit. Because of this I am going to need to charge more for the tight knit rather than the loose knit. I need to charge enough to cover the price of the wool and the amount of time and labor that was put into the blanket. I have been looking online to find cheaper wool that I do not have to order all the way from China but I have not had hardly any luck finding anything better than what I have already gotten. This past weekend I went shopping and went to craft stores in Winston Salem to try and find some wool for my chunky knit blankets. I went to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart but did not find anything that I needed. My goal for the next week is to research and try to find a more efficient way to knit the chunky knit blankets and also find a better price for the amount of wool that is needed. Also I am wanting to finish this first order up as soon as I can, I do not want to keep my customers waiting.
